Sharing the 5 principles ("Be-Attitudes") I have applied to my career in order to be successful as a woman physician leader in academic medicine.

First, be purpose-driven. Know your why - why you chose a career in academic medicine and the goals you have for yourself, your patients, and your community.

Be at your best. Know when you are most productive and creative, and then organize your day and your week so you align your times of creativity and productivity with your schedule.

Be about your boundaries. Once you know the best times you are able to work, create boundaries to protect that time, both at home and at work. We need to create boundaries for self-care just as we need to create boundaries to be productive at work.

Be the boss. Identify your niche - your area of specialization, and then create your team so you can pursue your purpose and create value for yourself, your patients, and your institution.

Be brave. You've done the work. You are successful. Ask for the things you need to continue to pursue your purpose.

"Being Purpose Driven" is the first 'Be-Attitude' of the Called to Medicine (C2M) Career Strategy. It is the state of knowing who you are, why you are here, and what grounds you.

Knowing who you are means understanding your purpose and focusing your intentions and actions toward that purpose.

What is standing in the way of achieving it?
